Homeowners are turning to Gibson Heating and Plumbing of North East Indiana in response to the approval of the America’s Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Owner Mark Gibson says, "The federal tax credits for residential energy efficiency makes 2009 the perfect time for homeowners to evaluate their homes and upgrade equipment."
President Obama recently signed the legislation that gives taxpayers a 30% renewable energy tax credit; up to a maximum of $1500 of the cost of a new energy efficient furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters, and programmable thermostats. There is no tax credit limit on geothermal and heat pump systems. The credit covers installation costs of the qualifying federal Energy Star equipment, including labor for that specific installation between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. Indiana residents may also be eligible for an additional state credit of 20% with a maximum of $100 per taxable year.
Calls are coming into Gibson Heating and Plumbing and according to Mark Gibson, getting the credit is quite simple. "Homeowners file IRS Tax Form 5695 (2009 version) with their tax return and submit a copy of the contractor’s invoice and the manufacturer’s certification statement for each piece of qualified equipment."
Gibson has put together a packet of information to educate homeowners on what they may qualify for. Gibson customer Beverly McGrew says she’s investing now, to save in 2009 and for years to come. "Not only will I get the tax credit, but my home will be more energy efficient and I’ll save money on my heating bills."
