Can I reuse my Air Filter

If you’re the owner of a central heating and cooling unit, you’ll know one thing to be true: you must replace the filter regularly in order for your system to function effectively. However, there is a possibility that you can reuse a filter — but how so? Before keeping your current filter intact for longer than it should, here are some things to consider.

Things to Know About Your Home’s Air Filter

Different Filters

Believe it or not, there are two types of filters that you can obtain for your home’s HVAC unit: those that must be replaced (approximately every 60 days, with regular system use) and those that can be washed and reused.

However, it’s essential to know that, if you have a filter that is intended to be disposed of after two months, you must replace it — don’t attempt to wash it and reuse it; that could hinder your system’s performance and overall well-being.

Replace Regularly

As mentioned above, it’s crucial to replace your home’s air filter regularly if you are using your system frequently. Often, a filter should be replaced between two-to-three months to help protect and extend the lifespan of your unit and avoid bogging down its performance, which could lead to the need for repair.

However, if you live in a home where there may be a high volume of indoor allergens (i.e., pet fur), then it may be wise to replace your filter a tad sooner — say, about every two months or less.

Keep Track of Filter Changes

Sometimes, it’s simple to forget about your filter. And when that’s the case, you might leave it intact for longer than it should be — which, as mentioned earlier, isn’t a good thing. To help keep track of your filter replacements, it’s a good idea to document (whether that be on a piece of paper or in a smartphone’s notepad) when you installed your current filter. This way, you’ll know when it’s time to purchase a new one or wash your current one.
