How to Unclog a Sink Drain

  • Add Boiling Water - A small amount of boiling water can help your pipes unclog blocked drains caused by hair, grease, soap residue, and other debris. When clearing a clogged sink, start with the easiest fix. You shouldn't use this method if your drain is connected to PVC pipes, as the boiling water could melt or damage the plastic.
  • Check the Garbage Disposal - Sinks with garbage disposals may be the source of drainage problems. Turning on the disposal usually clears up the clog. Overheated or dysfunctional disposals may not even turn on, but a reset switch can be found on the side or bottom of the unit that can be used to reboot them. Once the disposal has been reset, turn it on again to remove the clog. If the problem persists, contact a professional.
  • Use a Plunger - Once you have determined that the disposal is not the problem, you can pull out the plunger. If you have only a toilet plunger on hand, you can use that, but it is recommended to use a flat-bottomed one. Plunge into the sink with your plunger when it is about halfway full.
  • Baking Soda & Vinegar - An alternative to chemical drain cleaners, this method is designed to unclog drains naturally. Baking soda and vinegar are also common household products that you probably already have in your kitchen. Pour one cup baking soda and one cup white vinegar down the drain, then remove standing water and let the mixture do its thing. Keep it sealed for about ten minutes, then flush. Flush with hot water.
  • Plumber’s Snake - Blockages that put up a fight will require the strength of a plumber's snake to remove. A spiral snake is attached to the tool, which reaches down into the drain. The handle on the snake can be turned to dislodge debris and pull it out of the drain once it hits an obstruction. Electrical snakes offer even more power to clear out drain obstructions.

How to Prevent Drain Clogs in the Future

Many people make the mistake of using chemical cleaners or tools to try to clear out drain clogs on their own. Drain cleaners come in many different forms which are intended to help clear out clogs. However, they can actually do damage to your plumbing system, according to research conducted from Angi. Instead of wasting your money and time on these products, it is important that you hire a professional plumber to provide you with drain cleaning services and learn how to prevent clogs in the future.

A few steps you can take to help avoid clogs include:

  • Use a sink strainer and don't dump large foods down the sink
  • Use a bathroom and tub sink stopper to avoid hair going down the drain
  • Don't flush baby wipes, paper towels, or feminine items down the toilet

When home remedies don’t solve the Problem

Our skilled professional team at Gibson's Heating & Plumbing, Inc. can ensure that your drain and sewer issues are fixed. We help customers all over Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southeast Michigan. Here’s our process:

  • We review your system & evaluate
  • We have a variety of tools to solve your drain and sewer clogs, back-ups, and stoppages. We provide you options and up-front pricing with the best options to solve your drain issue. If it can be solved with use of video camera inspection, cable snake (rooter) or cleaned using our hydro jetting system that’s generally the least invasive and preferred solution by most homeowners.
  • We offer you the option to join our Service Partner Plan drain maintenance program, which provides annual inspection, through an easily accessible working clean-out, priority service when issues do arise, and discounts on services. This is a great option to extend the life of your drain & sewer system. Often we will identify a problem with your system that can only be truly fixed by replacement (think cracks, offsets, root damage, bellies, corrosion, collapsed drains, & damaged sewer lines) but through regular maintenance we may be able to keep your drains operating until it’s in your budget to replace.
  • If the issue cannot be solved by the above options or you’re ready for a more permanent solution to your drain and sewer line issues, we also offer replacement options. We also offer financing options when ready.

What is the benefit of an Annual Video Inspection?

By using our camera equipment in your lines, we identify where and what the problem is more accurately. We can determine if the issue is being caused by a clog, intrusive roots, or damaged pipes. With annual inspections the plumbers at Gibson’s can keep track of how healthy your pipes are and assess when a repair or replacement is necessary. We identify issues before they turn into expensive problems.

What is Hydro Jetting Service?

By filling the line with highly pressurized water, we can essentially blast away whatever is creating a problem. This solution is more effective and more environmental than utilizing any chemical cleaner you’ll find on the market. It’s also safer and less damaging to your drains and can extend the life of your drains and pipes over other options.

What drain and sewer replacement options do Gibson’s offer?

Gibson’s provide complete service for two different replacement methods. Both methods begin with Gibson’s marking utilities and reaching out to the appropriate jurisdiction for approvals/ permits (dependent on location). We have the contacts and know what legally is required to properly complete the work. Once we handle the paperwork and approvals- we work with our internal excavation and plumbing team to schedule accordingly. We do NOT require the use of third-party excavating businesses so you’re on the schedule in a timely manner. On average, once scheduled, the replacement takes 1 day to complete, with some complex jobs requiring more time.

Bursting replacement method: This is less intrusive and requires less yard restoration. Depending on your home’s set-up and pipe materials we can often replace under your driveway or even under a portion of the street without damaging precious landscape. Essentially Gibson’s technicians dig entry and exit points near your existing line and then we pull the new pipe through the old pipe- which will “burst” the old pipe and install the new pipe simultaneously. This doesn’t work for all situations, but if you’re hesitant about the potential destruction a drain/ sewer replacement can cause this might be an alternative option.

Dig/ Excavation method: This method is the traditional method which will require Gibson’s to dig with our excavation team to expose the damaged or broken area and replace necessary piping. This is more invasive, but is extremely efficient in removing the obstruction and replacing all required lines. Once the repair is completed, we do our best to spread out the excess dirt this creates to leave your area as neat and level as possible.
